What is Somatic Experiencing?
Reconnect with Your Body. Reclaim Your Resilience.
Stress, shock, and trauma often live in our bodies long after the event has passed. You may not always have the words for what you're feeling—but your body remembers. Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) offers a powerful, body-based approach to healing the effects of trauma by gently helping your nervous system find its way back to balance.
Rather than focusing on the story of what happened, SE centers on how trauma shows up in your body—as tension, overwhelm, shutdown, or a sense of being stuck. It works with the nervous system to gently unwind the fight, flight, or freeze patterns that can shape how we feel, relate, and function in our everyday lives. Over time, SE helps you build resilience, feel more grounded in your body, and regain a sense of calm and connection.
Rooted in decades of clinical research, Somatic Experiencing is used by a wide range of professionals—therapists, doctors, bodyworkers, and educators—to help people heal from trauma and chronic stress. It draws on insights from neuroscience, biology, psychology, and even the natural world to understand how our bodies respond to threat—and how we can safely return to a sense of safety.
What Somatic Experiencing Can Help With
Whether you’re navigating the aftereffects of a single traumatic event or the slower, ongoing stress of life experiences that have built up over time, SE can help. This approach supports healing from:
PTSD and complex trauma
Childhood or attachment-related wounds
Medical trauma and chronic pain
Emotional abuse, neglect, or loss
Systemic and intergenerational trauma
Anxiety, overwhelm, or dissociation
Trauma can look like emotional numbness, chronic stress, feeling constantly on edge, or struggling to feel safe in your own body. SE helps gently release the stored survival energy that keeps those patterns in place—so you can live with more ease, presence, and wholeness.
How It Works
SE is a collaborative, mindful process that honors your pace. It works by supporting you to tune into your body’s natural rhythms and sensations. Together, we’ll notice what your body is communicating—and slowly build your capacity to experience and release difficult sensations and emotions without overwhelm.
This isn’t about diving into your trauma head-on. Instead, we work with what’s manageable and present in the moment, allowing your body to complete responses that were once interrupted—like shaking, trembling, or orienting to safety. These are the body’s natural ways of discharging stress and resolving the threat response.
Inspired by the way animals in the wild recover from danger, SE recognizes that trauma isn’t in the event itself—it’s in how the body gets stuck in survival mode. With the right support, that stuck energy can move, and healing becomes not only possible, but deeply empowering.
Why This Matters
When trauma is held in the body, it can shape every part of our lives—from how we relate to others, to how we think, feel, and move through the world. Somatic Experiencing offers a compassionate path back to yourself. It’s not just about healing from the past—it’s about helping your nervous system feel safe enough to fully engage in the present.
You don’t have to carry it alone. Your body already holds the wisdom and capacity to heal—and I’m here to help you rediscover it.
